MORNING. NEAR THE APEX OF THE BOW...A DOWNBURST OF STRONGER
WINDS...ESTIMATED 65 TO 75 MPH...PRODUCED CONCENTRATED DAMAGE IN
SECTIONS ALONG US HIGHWAY 62. DAMAGE WAS MOST PRONOUNCED FROM JUST
EAST OF INTERSTATE 24 TO LONE OAK ROAD ALONG HIGHWAY 62...ALONG HEW
HOLT ROAD NEAR THE PADUCAH COUNTRY CLUB...AND ALONG OLIVET CHURCH
ROAD JUST NORTH OF HIGHWAY 62. SEVERAL TREES WERE UPROOTED AND
NUMEROUS BRANCHES AND LIMBS WERE DOWNED. MOST OF THE UPROOTED TREES
HAD SHALLOW ROOT SYSTEMS AND WERE PROBABLY MORE PRONE TO FALLING
DUE TO THE VERY MOIST SOIL CONDITIONS. A FEW HOMES SUSTAINED MINOR

* EVENT ENDING LOCATION: 3.75 MILES NORTH NORTHWEST OF THE
                         METROPOLIS AIRPORT.

* PEAK WIND: 160 MPH

* DAMAGE DIMENSIONS: APPROX. 100 YARDS WIDE BY 3.5 MILES LONG

* INJURIES: TWO PEOPLE HOSPITALIZED. MULTIPLE MINOR INJURIES.

* FATALITIES: NONE

* DISCUSSION/DAMAGE: 6 VEHICLES TOSSED UP TO 100 YARDS...ONE IN A
  POND. ROOF AND WALLS BLOWN OUT OF WELL BUILT LOG HOME. HUNDREDS OF
  TREES UPROOTED OR BROKEN OFF. NUMEROUS TREES ON CARS. NUMEROUS
  POWER POLES DOWN. 4 MOBILE HOMES DESTROYED.

MONDAY SEPTEMBER 25, 2006

Press conference today at 4 P.M. in Perry County, Missouri concerning tornado on Friday, the strongest ever recorded in September in our region.

 

The National Weather Service Office in Paducah, Kentucky will host a press conference this Monday afternoon, Sept. 25, 2006, beginning at 4:00 P.M. at the Zion Lutheran Church in Crosstown, Missouri. Topic of discussion will be the Perry County, MO to Jackson County, IL tornado that occurred on Friday, September 22. The press conference will be conducted by National Weather Service Warning Coordination Meteorologist Rick Shanklin.

Damage surveys are continuing, particularly for the long-track tornado across Perry County, Missouri into Jackson County, Illinois. This tornado will be rated at least F-3 (158 to 206 MPH), but a final intensity rating has not yet been assigned. The tornado damage in the Jackson County portion of the path was rated F-2.
