I had these two weird dreams about Israel over the last few days.  Disturbing dreams.  This is the year for Israel.  None of it good.  I always have the most vivid dreams...I guess that makes sleeping fun.  heh  Then there is the meteor dream...which just keeps going and going :)

Interesting days ahead...dark days.

UNBELIEVABLY WARM HERE - SIXTIES HERE AGAIN!  JUST UNREAL!

Strong 6.6 magnitude earthquake occurs off Mexico's Baja California coast
(about time for another in California itself)

9:14 a.m. January 4, 2006

MEXICO CITY – A strong 6.7-magnitude earthquake occurred in the pre-dawn hours off the coast of the Baja California peninsula in the Sea of Cortes, also known as the Gulf of California, the U.S. Geological Survey's National Earthquake Center in Golden, Colorado reported.

The quake occurred about 2:32 a.m. local time (0832 GMT), and was centered about 56 miles (89 kilometers) northeast of Santa Rosalia, Baja California. The quake occurred at an estimated depth of six miles (10 kilometers), the center reported.

The area is sparsely populated, and there were no immediate reports of damage or injuries.

USGS geophysicist John Bellini said the earthquake was too small and occurred along the wrong type of fault to cause a tsunami.

A tsunami can occur when two plates of the Earth's crust move up and down against each other, causing sea waves, Bellini said. Wednesday's earthquake occurred along a strike-slip fault, when two plates move back and forth against each other, he said.

Mexico's National Seismological Center posted no initial report of the temblor on its Web site. The two centers sometimes report different intensities of quakes.

METEORS

Impact Hazard

A meteoroid does not have to reach the ground to cause damage.  Man made satellites orbiting as far as 35,000 kilometers above the earth or farther, can easily be damaged by a small meteoroid.  Even the shuttle experiences minor damage from micro-meteroids every mission.

Each day as many as 4 billion meteoroids, most miniscule in size, enter earth's atmosphere.  Most of these meteors burn up from atmospheric friction and never reach the ground.  Only a few larger and more dense meteors reach the earth's surface and make an impact.

Smaller meteorites won't have noticeable effects or cause limited damage like breaking someone's window or hitting their car.   But the wide-spread effects from larger meteorites have some scientists looking toward the sky to catch a glimpse of incoming objects before they get here.  These scientists monitor numbers near-Earth objects (NEO's) mostly 1 kilometer or larger to determine if and when an impact will occur.

Based on known impact craters and their age, this chart shows how often differing strength impacts have occurred in the past.  Unfortunately, the past may not be a very good indicator since we really don't know when the earth may encounter new objects yet unseen.

Cloudy outside this morning :) and cold.  It is actually only in the thirties today.  Good grief...one might think it is winter out there.  No snowflakes yet though.  I will await my snow.  It will come...one day!

The National Weather Service in Paducah contacted me today and said this :) (this is a weather weenies dream come true)

Beau,

Just FYI, we received a request from Weatherwise magazine for a
larger version of one of your photos. Among others on our site, they
would like to include one of your photos in an article reviewing 2005
weather.

I believe we have a larger version that I can provide them. If not,
I will direct them to you.

They have your name and will give credit to you for taking the
photo.

Mike

Busy day around here :)  House is coming along nicely.  Getting things back in order.  Cleaning everything up and moving on.  That is a good thing I suppose.  Definitely in a good mood the last two days.  That is a bonus I guess :)  It was actually cold all day.  Rained this evening...well not rain but sprinkles.  Not even enough to make the roads wet.  We need rain.  BAD

SHADOW ANGEL FOUNDATION UPDATE

The Rape Crisis Center has requested some more teddy bears...here is an email clip

We appreciated your donation so much.  And the children who adopted them did too!  The first one I gave out was to a little 7-year-old girl who had just been through interviews with the police and social services.  I think that bear was more than just a bear for her.  I cannot believe how many we have given out to children we work with as well as their siblings who come in.  We are only down to a few here and I think we have a few in both of our satellite offices.  We will always welcome more!

Thanks again,

Lori Wells Brown, M.S.
Director of Clinical Services
|Rape Crisis Center

The foundation gave them several hundred bears last Spring.  I guess we will have to deliver some more!

WELLLLL flurries tonight in Paducah...light snow.  A little dusting on top of the care.  My forecast last Friday for some light snow on Thursday did pretty good!  Still nothing major though.  Flurries...heh

EXCITING :)
