Rita has maintained most of her strength overnight. She should start to weaken some later this morning. Expect her to move further north and east than earlier forecast models indicated. Rita could cause major damage to portions of the upper Texas Coast and Louisiana. This is an extremely dangerous hurricane.
MAJOR traffic jams across Houston this morning. People are reportedly driving just a few miles per hour. Over 1 million people are expected to leave the Houston area.

Blog Quote
There was a woman on the phone to local Houston television a few moments ago.
They left League City (southeast side of Houston near Galveston Bay) at 4 pm
yesterday.
They just now got onto 290 from the Beltway now.
In other words, they've made approximately 35 miles in 20 hours, they're still
in Houston, and 290 is the same sort of parking lot.
It's the same story everywhere, except that people are running out of gas and
blocking the road.
And there's no gas to be found. The Governor has asked the Air Force if they can
fly some in, but I don't know how you distribute it.
And more good news from Houston. The delay at Hobby airport is many hours long
because workers called in "sick" or just didn't show up at all. And there's no
room in ANY parking lot. You either take a taxi to the airport or you abandon
your car in a bad neighborhood and walk to the airport.

President Bush to monitor Hurricane Rita from NorthCom
President Bush will visit Northern Command in Colorado Springs this week to monitor Hurricane Rita as it bears down on the Texas coastline.
It will be Bush’s first look at Northern Command since it was created in October 2002 in response to the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.
White House spokesman Allen Abney said Bush will land sometime after 6 p.m. tomorrow and depart Saturday.
“The purpose is to come and monitor the storm and get a firsthand look at the military response effort and where those (assets) are being directed,” Abney said.
White House spokesman Scott McClellan said during a Thursday morning media briefing that Bush planned to go to Texas Friday afternoon to “get a firsthand look at the preparations that are underway for Hurricane Rita and to show our support for the first responders as they get ready for the response to Hurricane Rita.”
He’ll then fly to Peterson Air Force Base, Northern Command’s headquarters.
